Pilates Matwork Classes

Pilates matwork classes are group based classes with a maximum of 10 people per class. These are mixed ability group classes that run as courses during school term only and last for 1 hour. A varied programme of exercises is delivered for the duration of the course. Gradual progression is made by starting with the basic levels, and then as you progress through the course, further levels and variations are provided. Challenges are also offered by using different equipment such as over balls, swiss balls, resistance rings, foam rollers, balance pads, wobble cushions, and dyna-bands.

Parent and Baby Postnatal Pilates (Matwork)

Parent and Baby Postnatal Pilates classes are group based classes with a maximum of 7 people per class. The class runs for 60 minutes. You will regain stability, strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, re-educate your body, retrain your abdominal muscles, and correct any postural issues following the natural changes in your body during pregnancy. The emphasis is to help your postnatal recovery to help you regain pre-pregnancy fitness. Classes are held in a relaxed environment where the needs of your baby come first and while you exercise your baby will be by your side. NB. It is not advisable to return to exercise until at least six weeks after the birth and ten weeks or longer if you had a Caesarean section. Make sure you always check with your GP before returning to exercise.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation is an ongoing process to maintain and refine skills that will last for months or years after an injury. Equilibrium Pilates & Fitness offers rehabilitation sessions which encompass task-related training, physical coping strategies and resistance training applying the Pilates principles.

Pilates exercises promote an even musculature throughout the body by strengthening the deeper stabilisers (i.e. core muscles, the muscles closest to the spine, which give us strength and support). Pilates also encourages spinal and pelvic alignment, which is crucial to encourage the body to move the way we are supposed to move to prevent injuries.

Many injuries happen due to lack of core strength and poor quality of movement. Whether recovering from a pulled muscle in the lower back or hip surgery, learning to connect to your deeper stabilisers will improve your quality of life so that you can learn to move more effectively and with less pain in the long run.

Rehabilitation classes are developed and supervised by qualified staff who will make sure that you have a safe, effective, and appropriate programme targeted to your needs.

Rehabilitation sessions

Our Specialist Staff are experienced in delivering:

  1. Specialist rehabilitation sessions for neck and back pain and injuries, sciatica, shoulder injuries and tendonitis, hip injuries, ankle injuries, knee injuries and total knee/hip replacements, scoliosis, and other spinal issues.
  2. Specialist Exercise Referral sessions for conditions such as hypertension, hypercholestrolaemia, CHD and angina pectoris, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, and Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 and 2.
  3. Specialist rehabilitation sessions for cancer patients, stroke and other neurological conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's disease, and fibromyalgia.

Sessions take place on an individual basis or, depending on initial assessment, as a small group of people with the same condition (max 4 people). Please contact us for further details.

Your first session

Your first session will comprise an initial assessment where a detailed history, any issues you might have, and goals will be discussed. You will fill in a Health Questionnaire (please note stroke clients will complete the Stroke Impact Scale (SIS) and the Chedoke Arm and Hand Activity Inventory (CAHAI) form). This information, combined with the client(s) goals, will target the exercise programme. A general review will be undertaken every 6 weeks to ensure that the individual needs are appropriately addressed.

You will have a ‘hands on’ expertise who will share their knowledge and advice in every session. Our specialist staff have a wealth of experience and an extensive knowledge of the human body and also injury, so each session will be tailored to your individual needs (and goals) and make sure you get the most out of it.

Every rehabilitation programme is targeted, fit for purpose, and functional. As part of this process, you will develop tools which will allow you to put in practice as part of your daily activities.
